In Playlists We Trust: Why We Love Playlists

vinyl records and headphones

Firstly, playlists are one of my favorite things; I consider it to be something intimate. To share a bit about yourself through music because it’s the musical equivalence of a mood ring.

Playlists capture and set any given moment as well as cover all moods.
For instance, it can solidify a burgeoning relationship, encapsulate friendships, leave you reminiscing about a breakup, and so much more. Seeing someone’s playlist(s) is like peeking through someone’s medicine cabinet, we’re all curious creatures by nature (even if we don’t like to admit we’re naturally nosy), so here’s a little peek into mine.

I spend way too much time searching through random playlists, especially of strangers; however, it’s not intentional. I don’t mean to lurk, I begin with searching for a particular song, yet I peek through the playlist option and two hours later… I find myself in a playlist search rabbit hole.

Additionally, there’s something about great song choices to capture a moment. Perhaps it’s the cinephile in me that would think “what song would be playing if my life or this moment was a movie?” I’m aware that it’s a bit dramatic. Nevertheless, I do love it when a song can summarize a moment perfectly. Listed below are some of my current playlists names that I have publicly (I like to keep an air of mystery so you’ll have to guess what my private lists are):

•Bowie
Caucasion Bops (courtesy of Jaboukie)
•Chill (self-explanatory)
•Cloud 9
•Cunty (when I need a dose of empowerment)
•Dissociating (this mix is different from my melancholia mix)
•Elton John
•George Harrison (my favorite songs by my favorite Beatle)
•Halloween
•In Bloom
•International Women’s Day ’20
•International Women’s Day ’19
•Late Night (bedroom pop hops)
•Latinx Beats
•Luke (dedicated to my bestie)
•Melancholia
•Mercurial (the name says it all)
•Pen15 (entitled and inspired after the Hulu show)
•Phoenix (necessary for post-breakup pick me up)
PII
Quarantunes
•Queen (dedicated to my bestie)
Ramones Love Songs
•Reading music
•Sad Mix (the mix I cry to)
Selena
•Stargazing
•That ’70s Music
•Vibes
•Yeehaw (for my Texan roots)
•’00s Indie

I love a great playlist. There’s nothing better than swapping music with friends or a significant other because it’s a beautiful moment of intimacy, like sharing a piece of your soul. Especially if the music is essential to a person or if it’s someone’s favorite artist and when someone begins to love it. That feeling is even better.

Lastly, the playlist below is created by the music I’m currently loving; whether it’s new loves or classic ride or die tracks. Altogether, turn on and tune in and above of all, enjoy.
