Playlists and of course, Jazz

On average I go on Spotify 15 times a day, give or take. I’ve lost track. I’m aware this is a bit more than your average person but we all have our vices. As of recent, mine has been making playlists- though I did have some great ones back in the good ol‘ iPod days.  

Alas, I can’t fully pinpoint when this more contemporary playlist phenomenon started, but I’ve been passionate and inherently drawn to making these for nothing more than my very own amusement.

Almost by instinct,  I often watch movies, go to coffee shops, or go about my day with this lens in mind, the “what song is playing” lens. I typically compile music by examining my ongoing iPhone notes, old screenshots of songs others recommend on Instagram (and elsewhere), songs I’ve Shazam-ed from movies, among others.

My first real memorable impression with a song was when I was about 7 or so whilst at my grandma’s friend’s house. There I heard the first few words of what is quite possibly the most beautiful echo-y, romantic voice; Mr. Ol’ Blue eyes himself lullabying to Strangers in the Night. Yes, a 7- year old bemused by a ’50s crooner, who’d a thunk? But it struck a chord and now we’re here, 2019 and I have quite the jazz playlist, my favorite of all I must add. 

This may not be jam-packed with crooning hums of better days and instead, it’s mostly instrumental. Frank Sinatra was my segue into jazz and thus he holds a special place but there are others now i.e Charlie Parker, Thelonious Monk, Sun Ra, Charles Mingus, etc.
