LA native Angelica Garcia continues her ascending trajectory with her latest release, Penny in My Back Pocket via Spacebomb Records.
Formally from East LA, Angelica Garcia’s presently living in Richmond, Virginia, and is the daughter of Mexican and Salvadoran parents.
Garcia blends her multicultural experiences into a blend of regional Mexican folk sounds along with a mix of spirited indie rock and R&B soul into a melding of anthems.
As fellow Latinx’s, we can’t get enough of Garcia’s debut album Cha Cha Palace. Her poetically intrepid songs are defiant canticles that fight against the silent complacency during the current political unrest. Also, the album’s a celebration of her roots, which’s evident in her latest Penny in My Back Pocket.
Of the song, Garcia further explains, “Penny In My Back Pocket’ is about keeping up your stride. To be human is to stumble along your path. The song asks for clarity, whether that means a clear sign or knowing when to hold oneself accountable. Everyone needs a little help navigating this — ‘a penny in the back pocket for good luck.’”
The track sounds as if low-fi meets a hip-hop-infused Alanis Morissette of the ’90s, complete with a dripping echoing growl-like attitude. Listen to Penny In My Back Pocket below.
