Not many albums can capture the essence of youth- that feeling of being adolescent and free. Similarly to that, is the exact moment in Perks of Being a Wallflower where Charlie feels infinite; that’s the feeling I have listening to Boniface.
The creation of Canada’s Micah Visser, Boniface, has the sound of a seasoned music veteran. For example, their ability to have an adept ear not only versification but also vulnerability. Which is something complex placing into words, yet Boniface has generated into a melody.
Perhaps I’m feeling nostalgic, or maybe Boniface evoked something within. Regardless, the self-titled album’s ability to put out a redolent coming-of-age debut that anyone will relate to is an impressive fête.
Throughout the album themes include self-reflection, love, and heartache- all while struggling with self-identity, gives off anthemic 1980’s energy of a triumphant entrance.
A swaggering sound recorded between Winnipeg and London. Yet, there’s still an intimacy factor which’s probably due to being partly recorded in their bedroom by Boniface themselves as well as producer Neil Comber (Charli XCX, Glass Animals, M.I.A).
Moreover, Boniface further explains. “It is a collection of stories about coming of age in a small town. An intimate series of vignettes from my youth that only came to be through collaboration with a handful of the kindest, most talented people I’ve ever met.”
