Album Review: Banoffee “Look At Us Now Dad,” Stream Now

Banoffee

Banoffee’s Look At Us Now Dad is not only a Herculean debut but, also, an ode to empowerment that celebrates survival as well as overcoming adversity.

Melbourne-born Martha Brown, also known musically as alt-pop goddess Banoffee, has just released her debut album Look At Us Now Dad. Written in the two years after moving to LA in 2017, seeking a fresh start after re-evaluating her life to self-reflect with a fine-toothed comb to recoup her narrative.

Now she’s a multilateral artist that possesses a skilled musical talent for a transgressive and deeply vulnerable approach to pop. This multi-tiered perspective brings new meaning to just universally adored pop bangers; her debut album’s a beacon of hope in her ongoing journey.
For instance, the first listen of Look At Us Now Dad, it pops like a beautifully iridescent oil slick on hard texturized concrete. In contrast, as lustrous as it first appears its words begin to seep in.

Themes of vulnerability, sadness, support of the #MeToo movement, loss, and mental health are all featured. Not to mention being a survivor of substance and relationship abuse shows in her debut. While most survivors experience shame and guilt, Look At Us Now Dad offers Banoffee to not only retrieve her independence but also her voice.
Banoffee further explains, “each track is about a struggle and achievement that anyone could experience, the ones that seem so trivial. We’re all survivors for one reason or another.”

Indeed, it’s a comforting ode to those who feel alienated or isolated by the weight of the world we carry. After receiving an advance copy, I can say that it’s brought me comfort as the wave of my anxious-depressive brain was starting to self-sabotage into detachment.
A glimmer of hope in almost a dystopian-like world, Look At Us Now Dad is a scintillating debut.

As Banoffee continues on her path of molding a new wave of pop oddity, without a doubt she’s lighting up today’s queer club underground and bringing it onto the forefront. Not only lighting it but also sparking it into submission. Stream Look At Us Now Dad below or via Apple Music or Spotify.

Although Banoffee’s toured with Taylor Swift in her worldwide Reputation tour as part of Charli XCX’s band, she’s now front and center in her own right. Look At Us Now Dad is out now via Cascine Records.
